Highland
cattle are calm and friendly animals, mildly curious without being too
intrusive or eager.
No
machine can match the effectiveness of these animals when it comes to
clearing fields of unwanted vegetation and yet they can manage quite well
even on meagre soil. It is often said that Highland cattle has a slow
rate of growth, but with the right food they grow very well when compared
to the nutritional intake.
Highland cattle are comparatively light and can manage even on marshy
lands without damaging the fauna. They also eat many kinds of weed that
other races don't.
Because they are so calm they are easy to keep behind the fence without
risk for trouble.
Highland
cattle give birth very easily and miscarriage is very rare. The cattle
are also very maternal, and are usually friendly even to calves that aren't
their own.
The
race is very fertile and a cow can often give birth regularly to one calf
annually for twenty years. Their milk is of high quality with 7-11% fat
and the meat is deliciously marbled.
Highland cattle also have the largest measured back - 126 cm2. The meat
has been deemed as superior in taste and tenderness in several tests.
It is also relatively low on fat and cholesterol.
Highland
cattle is a race bred in very harsh climate, and it shows. It's a hardy
race, which can easily manage in cold winters on only hay, water and minerals.
This meagre diet is also sufficient to breed and feed a healthy calf,
something that is possible for few other races.
So anyone who wish to become a meat producer on a Scottish budget is
very well welcome!
